When we westerners go trekking or climbing in the Himalayas, we need the help of people from the mountains. The guides, cooks and porters who support trekking and expeditions in the high mountains belong to diverse populations such as Sherpa, Tamang, Magar, Gurung and Newari. Along the way we get acquainted with the living conditions of these mountain peoples, who are often poor and can offer their children little prospect of a better future. Education in their villages is poor and opportunities to develop are limited.
